Grasshopper. I love the shots I was able to get of this creature today.

Just before we left, this common raven flew around a little. There is something quite difficult about getting good shots of black birds on bright days, especially from below. In different light, this could have been a good shot, but as it stands, this is mostly just a shadow.

I came hoping for really nice shots of a broad-winged hawk. This is the best I got today.

It's easy to confuse a coopers hawk for a sharp-shinned hawk, but the white, and slightly curved, ends to the tail makes it clear that this is a coopers hawk, even though most of us misidentified it as a sharpie in the field.

As someone who is still learning, I often get confused about some of the categories-- I originally thought this was a warbler. Turns out it's a blue-headed vireo.

I don't know how best to describe a migrating hawk kettle, except to say that a photograph can't possibly do it justice. Migrating hawks will, as a group, find an area with the right atmospheric conditions to allow them to rise higher up into the atmosphere with very little work. When this happens above you, you can watch the hawks just spiral up and up and up until they break off. This particular kettle had about 24 hawks in it, but some have hundreds.

Smooth Green Snake, seen on Putney Mountain during hawk watch. I'd never seen one of these before. It's listed as medium priority under conservation need.

Broad-winged hawk.

This is one of three pictures of the same hawk seen on Putney mountain. This particular hawk was seen several times throughout the day and there was a bit of argument as to what specific type of hawk it is, but consensus on the Vermont Bird list is that it's a broad-winged hawk.

As soon as we arrived at the summit of Putney Mountain, we saw two bald eagles in flight from a distance off. I took pictures as fast as I could.
