Image ID# 1146

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 (Westmoreland, NH (near Goodrum's Crossing))

I saw this Rough-legged hawk just hanging out on a tree slightly south of Goodrum's Crossing. Nice view, good looks. Light was bad, but I still got an okay shot of it.

This is a young Redtail. Image #1147 is not the same bird. While looking at 1146, note the all white lower belly. On 1147 note the very dark lower belly and the two-tone brown striped leggings, making the flight bird a dark morph Roughleg. From the wings, we can say young Roughleg. Compare the two birds: they can't be same bird.

I agree that it is not a rough-legged hawk. The photo of it perced appears to be a red-tailed hawk, perhaps a juvenile. The photo of the bird taking off does not appear to be the same individual, since it has a much darker belly and wing-tips

It is a roughie in between juvy and adult plumages, in it's first winter.

This is not a Rough-legged Hawk.
There's a picture of it flying away at this link. If that's not a rough-legged hawk, what else could it be?
