I wasn't sure what this song sparrow was carrying in its mouth at first. It looked like leaves. It's actually a trio of small worms. I spotted one other song sparrow nearby holding several worms as well. I think they were both headed back to the nest to feed their young.Eastern Kingbird, perched.Every once in awhile while going through Dead Creek, I spot something unexpected. Last year it was an American Coot. This time it was this Blue-winged teal.Yellow warbler, perched on post. When I pulled up to take photos of an eastern Kingbird, it took flight, leaving me with this photo.Tree swallow, perched on wire.

Red-winged blackbird.American tree sparrow, hiding in the bushes.Song sparrow, in mid-song.One of the first things I noticed in one of the back access areas of Dead Creek was a juvenile bald eagle flying across the water.

I wasn't able to get any good shots of it until it landed in a nearby tree, but then I got this amazing look at it.I didn't actually expect to see any snow geese this late in the year, but this pair was hanging out at dead creek.Kestrel, perched on wire, getting ready to fly.

Snow goose flock, feeding at Dead CreekSnow goose, feeding at Dead CreekSnow goose, feeding at Dead CreekSnow goose, feeding at Dead CreekSnow goose flock at Dead CreekThis particular goose caught my eye-- its got an injured leg, but was able to move around quite well on its own. It's a tough call with injuries during migration. This one may turn out fine, but there's a good chance that its injury will lead to infection or some other problem.

Savannah SparrowOn the way out of the back access area, I spotted a group of sparrows. Most of them flew off as soon as I stopped, but this Savannah sparrow hung out for some time.I always look for eagles at Dead Creek, but rarely get this nice a look at one.I've seen green herons on this branch more than once, so I always make a point of checking it out as I drive through. As I was taking pictures of this green heron, I inadvertently spooked a black-crowned night heron as well but, unfortunately, didn't get a decent picture.Whenever I go to Dead Creek, I make a point of checking out a pair of dead trees that I think of as the sort of trees that raptors like. Until this morning, I've only ever seen one raptor there, and it was dark enough that I couldn't ID it sufficiently, though I think it was a Northern Harrier. Today, my diligence about this tree paid off. I spotted an Osprey on the tree, got the camera ready and was able to pull off a few quick shots before it flew off.The angle of light at this particular position complicated the picture taking. I'd wanted to capture something really neat here, but didn't succeed. When I spotted this red-tailed hawk, I was surprised to see it screech directly at me, fly, but not fly far. Usually, they just fly off. It wasn't until I a few minutes later that I figured out what was going on. A much younger red-tail was in the grass nearby, feeding on something. I realized that the hawk in the air was the parent and didn't like me getting anywhere near its kid.

Tree swallow, taking flightI was headed out of one of the access areas in Dead Creek when I spotted this spotted sandpiper. I've only seen them out of season before, so seeing the bird in full breeding plumage was a real treat.Canada geese in flight.

This pair of mallards was feeding by the side of the road, so I took a few pictures.American Coot.I hadn't even noticed this American Coot at first, but when I finally spotted it, I took as many pictures as I could. Apparently it paid off.

I've posted a different version of this picture here back in November of 2006. I was wondering what would happen if I were to render the snow geese in black and white. I like the result.

Snow geese, coming in for landing.Snow geese in flight.Dead Creek hosts a large number of snow geese every year. They're often far off, and not easy to see, but sometimes they will take flight and swirl around the area. This is a section taken from the middle of a huge flying flock of snow geese that pretty much filled the horizon.Northern Harrier.Black-crowned night heron head shotI stopped by Dead Creek today and spotted this black crowned night heron. Before I knew it, it was joined by a second, and had moved in very close to the shore.
