Random things that happen when you're photographing birds in wet, marshy, areas: dragonflies sometimes fly into the frame.

Though I frequently see great egrets at the coast, I only occasionally see them in Vermont. Seeing them fly overhead in a group of four from my yard was a major surprise

The quality of photos you can get at dusk, even with the flash, can be seriously diminished, but I still like these images of a ruby-throated hummingbird feeding from a bee balm

This moth was hanging out in the showers at the campground. I carry my camera everywhere I go in case I see something interesting on the way, but it's just as well no one came into the restroom while I was taking photos from the shower stall. Probably would have ended up involving the park police or something.

This photo is one I find both fascinating and disturbing. Fascinating because I so rarely see a spider with its actual prey, and disturbing because the prey is so beautiful. I sometimes chide people for being more interested in preserving cute and/or beautiful animals than those which we don't find so appealing, and yet still I find myself disturbed by a spider eating something so gorgeous.

Not exactly what I'd call a 'successful' attempt to photograph fireflies, but that large yellow streak is, indeed, a firefly. Nearly twenty minutes of exposure time, and that's the only hint of a firefly in a shot in a forest absolutely loaded with fireflies.

I made the mistake of wearing red while sitting on the porch. A ruby-throated hummingbird showed up about three feet away from me before realizing I wasn't food, but when it came back, it was a bit wary for a bit, hiding in the bushes before figuring out that bee balm made a much better food than I did.

We heard these sparrows and had a little difficulty identifying them until we spotted the adult and realized it was a chipping sparrow with a fledgling.
